Description
This French violin, crafted by Xavier Couturieux, serves as a delightful instrument that embodies the artistry of French violin making in the mid-19th century. With its exquisite preservation and magnificent sound, it appeals to musicians who appreciate historic instruments with a distinctive style.
Dating back to approximately 1850, this violin received meticulous attention from the skilled luthier Xavier Couturieux of Mirecourt. Its sophisticated ornamentation is evident in the expertly applied double purfling, instantly setting it apart from other instruments originating from the same esteemed workshop.
Within the instrument’s body lies its original mark. Although the violin bears the inscription “à Paris,” a tribute often adopted during an era heavily influenced by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, it unmistakably represents the tradition of French violin making.
The transparent orange-brownish varnish of this violin beautifully complements the fine-to-moderately grained spruce top and highlights the intriguing irregularities of the one-piece maple back. While a minor repair was carried out on the voluminous, elegantly carved scroll, it only serves to enhance the authentic aesthetic of this exceptionally well-preserved antique violin.
We are delighted to offer this remarkable instrument, which requires practically no repairs and is ready to be played. Its powerful, radiant sound exhibits maturity, strength, and clarity, while maintaining a well-balanced tonal profile with beautiful resonance and excellent projection.
