Region: Italy
Year: c.1904
Tone: warm, clean, rich texture

Born in 1862 in Bollengo, Ivrea in Northern Italy, Giovanni Gaida trained as a violin-maker In France before going to London in 1890. He returned to his hometown in 1895, but eventually settled in London in 1904 where he worked for the well-known and respected French maker, Frederick William Chanot. He learned much from Chanot with regard to the French violin-making tradition, which can be seen in his scrolls and varnish antiquing, but he also was inspired by his Italian roots and the violins of the master makers, including Stradivari and Landolphi.

In this example, Gaida singed on the interior of the lower back dating in 1899 while in still bears the original Chanot 1904 label. Gaida made this violin later in his career and it has depth and resonance throughout. Its color palette ranges from a rich lower register to a fierce liveliness in the upper strings. It is in pristine condition and would be an ideal violin for the serious or professional player.

Dai Ailin | First Prize Winner, Violin Artist Category of National Piano & Violin Competition 2021

I am very grateful for the immense help Mingxi has given me, through lending me the violin and ensuring that my instrument could deliver its best sound during the competition, including making tonal adjustments before the competition which sometimes had to be arranged quite last-minute, but I could always get get a new, better sound on my violin which was extremely important for my performance. The Giovanni Gaida violin I borrowed from Mingxi had a warm sound that was also expressive and penetrating. It complemented my playing style very well and I enjoyed playing on it a lot.
